HDG Steel Overview
Hot dip galvanized steel sheets are manufactured by coating cold steel with a layer of zinc on its surface. Steel is extensively used in the construction and industrial sectors, but it is highly susceptible to corrosion. Galvanization is a cost-effective technique that helps to prevent corrosion. Hot dip galvanization provides the steel sheet with both physical and electrochemical protection. In the event that a small area of the zinc layer wears off, exposing the iron, the surrounding zinc layer acts as a sacrificial anode and protects the steel from corrosion.
Thickness
The thickness of galvanized steel sheets can range from 0.12mm to 3.0mm. Thinner sheets are more costly because they require more time and coating per ton.
Width
Galvanized steel sheets can be customized to range from 600mm to 1500mm in width. The standard widths are 914mm (3 feet), 1000mm, 1219mm (4 feet), and 1250mm. The 1500mm width is typically used for truck buckets.
Zinc Coated
The thickness of the zinc layer in galvanized steel sheets is directly proportional to their anti-rust effectiveness. Our company is capable of providing zinc coatings ranging from 20g to 275g per square meter.
Spangle
Galvanized steel sheets come in three spangle types: zero spangle, mini spangle, and big spangle. In the past, spangle were used to identify galvanized plates, but in fact, zero spangle have better anti-corrosion properties.
Raw Material
Galvanized steel is produced using cold-rolled steel as its raw material. The European standard commonly uses DX51 as the material of choice, while DX52 and DX53 are used for deep drawing purposes. In the JIS standard, SGCC is commonly used, while SGCD is used for deep drawing. The ASTM standard utilizes CS as the common material, while FS is used for deep drawing purposes.
Passivation & Oil
For customized galvanized steel, passivation and oiling are optional treatments. Trivalent chromium passivation and chromium-free passivation are considered environmentally friendly options. However, if hexavalent chromium passivation is used, direct contact with food is prohibited. Oiling the steel coil can improve its anti-corrosion performance, but it may require special equipment to remove the oil coating.

Galvanized Steel Sheet FAQ
Firstly, iron ore is processed into steel ingots. These steel ingots are then processed into hot-rolled steel sheets, which are subsequently transformed into cold-rolled steel sheets. The cold-rolled steel sheets are then continuously hot-dip galvanized, resulting in the production of galvanized steel sheets.

- Hot rolling is the first step in processing thin steel plates. The process of transforming steel ingots into hot-rolled plates requires heating, which is why it is called hot rolled steel. Major Chinese hot-rolling steel companies include Baosteel, WISCO, HBIS, ANSTEEL, Shougang, etc.
- Cold roll steel: Cold-rolled steel sheet is obtained by rolling hot-rolled steel sheet thinner without heating it, which is why it is called cold-rolled.
- Galvanized steel: After continuous hot-dip galvanizing of cold-rolled steel sheets, galvanized steel sheets are obtained, which have improved corrosion resistance due to the galvanizing process.
- Stainless steel: Unlike galvanized steel, which obtains its anti-corrosion properties through a coating, stainless steel achieves its anti-corrosion properties by adding other alloying elements. While the anti-corrosion properties of stainless steel are superior to those of galvanized steel, the price is several times higher. The choice between galvanized steel and stainless steel needs to consider the intended use.
- Hot galvanized steel is obtained by hot-dipping, resulting in a thick layer of zinc.
- Cold galvanized steel is produced by electroplating a thin layer of zinc onto the surface of a metal.
Hot-dip galvanized steel has a thicker layer of zinc coating, resulting in better anti-corrosion performance. On the other hand, cold galvanized steel, is easier to process due to its thinner zinc coating.
Galvanized steel can be welded, but if the zinc layer contains aluminum, it can affect the welding process.

- Galvalume steel is coated with 55% Al-Zn.
The corrosion resistance of galvalume steel is better than that of galvanized steel. However, there is one point to note, which is that the corrosion resistance of aluminum-zinc coated steel sheet will be compromised if it is cut.

In terms of zinc coating, 40-60g/㎡ galvanized steel are used for producing color-coated steel sheets, while those with a coating weight of 80-100g/㎡ galvanized steel are used for indoor construction and general industrial equipment.
